Can ChatGPT and Perplexity actually see your site?

Being citable in AI answers takes three things, and most sites fail at least one: the engines must be allowed to fetch your pages, the pages must carry readable text in the HTML, and your site must say who it is in a way a machine can parse. This runs all three checks at once. Free, no account required.

How does the ai visibility checker work?

From a URL to an answer in three steps — no setup, no spreadsheets.

Step 1

Paste your URL

No account, no install, no plugin. Enter any URL and start — RankForge works the way a search engine does.

Step 2

We crawl & map your site

RankForge crawls up to 100 pages, following internal links and building a map of how your pages connect.

What does this tool check?

Reach — whether robots.txt lets answer engines (OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Claude-User) fetch your pages at all
Readability — whether your pages carry real text in the HTML, or render empty until JavaScript runs
Identity — whether Organization/WebSite schema lets an engine attribute an answer to your brand
Agent guidance — whether llms.txt and RFC 8288 Link headers point agents at the pages that matter

What problems does this find?

The issues this check most often surfaces on real sites:

  • Answer engines are allowed in robots.txt, but the pages render empty without JavaScript so there is nothing to quote
  • A staging Disallow: / still blocking OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot months after launch
  • No identity schema, so an answer can describe what you do without attributing it to your brand
  • No llms.txt, leaving agents to guess which pages actually matter

What do I do after the check is complete?

People increasingly ask ChatGPT and similar tools instead of typing into Google. For one of those tools to recommend you, three things have to be true: it has to be allowed to look at your site, your pages have to contain actual text it can read, and your site has to state clearly who you are. We checked all three and flagged the ones that are not true.

  1. 1

Start with the pages that matter commercially

Work down the list in order of how much you care about the page, not how bad the number looks. A flagged page nobody needs to find is not worth an hour of your time.

  2. 2

Fix the cause, not the symptom

Most findings here are structural: a page is unreachable, under-linked, or competing with another page. Adding one contextual link from a strong, relevant page usually fixes more than editing the page itself.

  3. 3

Re-run this check to confirm the fix landed

The check is free and takes a couple of minutes. Re-crawling after a change is the only way to know it worked — and the full audit tracks the difference between crawls for you.

Why ai visibility checker matters for SEO

AI answers are taking a share of the clicks that used to reach websites, and the pages that get cited are the ones an engine could fetch, parse and attribute. Those are three separate failure points, and they are usually checked separately if at all. A site can allow every AI crawler and still be uncitable because its content only appears after JavaScript runs. Another can serve perfect server-rendered HTML and stay invisible because a robots.txt copied from a template blocks the answer engines. A third can pass both and never be named, because nothing on the page tells a machine which organisation it belongs to. Checking all three together is the only way to get a straight answer to the question that matters — whether an AI assistant can find you, read you, and say your name.

AI Visibility Checker: frequently asked questions

How is this different from the AI Crawler Checker?

It includes it. The AI Crawler Checker answers one question: does robots.txt allow the engines. This bundles that with whether your pages are readable without JavaScript and whether your identity schema lets an engine attribute an answer to you. If you only want the robots.txt answer, the dedicated tool is faster.

Does allowing AI crawlers help my Google rankings?

No, and we do not claim it does. AI visibility and search rankings are separate concerns, and RankForge never scores your SEO health down for a deliberate decision to block AI training crawlers. This check reports what your site currently does.

What is llms.txt?

A proposed plain-text file, like robots.txt, that points AI agents at the pages you consider canonical. Adoption is early and no engine is known to require it. We report whether you have one because it is cheap to add and costs nothing if it never catches on — not because it is a ranking factor.

Can you guarantee ChatGPT will cite my site?

No, and be suspicious of any tool that says otherwise. This tells you whether the mechanical prerequisites are met: reachable, readable, identifiable. Whether an engine actually cites you also depends on your content being the best answer to the question, which no checker can measure.

Is it free?

Yes, with no account. It crawls up to 100 pages of your site and reads the same data the full RankForge audit uses.
